PLQ MRX, a band born out of the seediest corners of the Philly scene, return with
a new full-length album, UPSIDEYERHEAD, out February 16 as a split release
between Reptilian Records(US) and Totem Cat Records(EU). From the depths of
North Philadelphia’s underground comes PLQ MRX, a project operating at the
intersection of abrasive noise rock, acid-soaked psychedelia, and warped funk. With
their new album UPSIDEYERHEAD, the collective delivers a sound that is
confrontational, heavy, and deliberately excessive – rooted in punk and noise traditions
while pushing toward stranger, more unhinged territory.
Musically, PLQ MRX exist somewhere between Flipper’s intensely distorted and sloppy
guitar noise and the lysergic looseness of Funkadelic, filtered through a distinctly
noise- and psych-rock sensibility, drawing comparisons to early Butthole Surfers. The
result is a sound that is louder, heavier, and weirder than its influences – raw, physical,
and intentionally disorienting. “The greatest selection of new, different and exciting
tunage to rock yer soul and twist yer melon!” proclaim the band.
Beyond the music itself, PLQ MRX cultivate an aesthetic steeped in excess, altered
states, and grotesque carnival imagery. Their world is populated by surreal characters
and exaggerated rituals, exploring pleasure, debauchery, and sensory overload. The
band leans into both the highs and the ugly turns of the trip, embracing chaos as a core
element of its identity.
PLQ MRX rise from the remnants of the Philadelphia collective Plaque Marks, who first
surfaced in 2017 with the EP Anxiety Driven Nervous Worship. While the lineup has
shifted and identities remain deliberately obscured, PLQ MRX pick up where that project left off – continuing its feral energy while pushing the sound into more expansive,
hallucinatory, and self-aware territory. Members of the collective are affiliated with
projects such as Unsane, Ecstatic Vision, and Swans, further anchoring PLQ MRX
within a lineage of uncompromising underground music.
